Sustainable Luxury
The 64 rooms in the hotel offer high-quality, modern furnishings. The lovingly restored main building, constructed in 1875, houses stucco ornamented rooms with a modern design and gorgeous parquet flooring. Some rooms also offer a view of the Colombipark. Comfortable Business rooms are located in the hotel’s quiet rear building. Over half of all rooms are suitable for allergy sufferers. The unique room furnishings are designed to limit environmental impact. Some are purchased from local carpenters, for instance, and are produced using 150 year-old Black Forest oak heart wood.
Our extensive breakfast buffet will take you on a taste journey through the region. Our milk comes from Breisgau cows, and our bread from Freiburg bakers. A butcher’s shop in Glottertal provides all of our sausages. In addition, our honey and marmalades also come from the Black Forest. Even the eggs we serve each morning are free-range, produced by Sonnen-Hof in nearby Hartheim.
Bar Culture and Iconic Bars
The Hemingway is a permanent feature on the Freiburg restaurant scene. It is a place for hotel guests and Freiburg locals to meet for a glass of wine, or two. The Hemingway also offers more than just classic drinks. Our creative bar staff loves to experiment and develop their own unique cocktails. They often produce the ingredients for these themselves, preferring to use local regional foods. Cocktail lovers can try anything from a Singapore Sling to a Baden Pear Fizz.
The Smoker’s Lounge – designed to have a “gentleman’s club” feel – offers the perfect escape for a relaxing cigar. Dark carpets, Chesterfield armchairs, and bankers’ lamps help create the right ambiance. The bar is located in the historic vaulted cellar, and looks out on the three meter-high water wall, which is a real eye catcher, in the Smoker’s Lounge. Around 40 liters of water evaporate from the wall over the course of an evening to help improve the air quality. Enjoying a cigarette or a cigar thus does not contradict a comfortable climate.

Solar power stations, wind turbines, pellet heating and solar thermal power are used to generate more energy than the hotel itself uses. Our commitment to environmental protection doesn’t stop when you walk in the door.
Every guest receives a free ticket for the extensive local public transportation system during their stay. This helps keep traffic levels within the city as low as possible. In addition, the hotel maintains its own fleet of bikes for riding around the area. Travelers with electric cars can “fuel up” with eco-friendly power at multiple charging stations directly on the hotel’s parking lot.
